Panalpina

15,000 people in over eighty countries work together while still respecting their local ways of working.

How can we have 15,000 people in over eighty countries work together while still respecting their local ways of working? How do they balance operational excellence with customer satisfaction, or individual freedom with collective interests? These questions marked our collaboration with Panalpina, a leading player in the transport industry, now merged with DSV.

Our Approach

Together with Panalpina, we designed Mexus: an impactful business simulation that contributed to a shared vision of the company and its ways of working. Global thinking was crucial; the business experience created by Mexus supported employees in embedding (new) values.

In developing the simulation, we examined the key elements of the organisation and its business model. We designed various business settings to help employees immerse themselves in different situations. They experienced leadership behaviours, explored decision-making processes, managed change, and learned to implement values.

Chief Human Resources Officer Alastair Robertson commented: “When running a business simulation within an organisation, there is often feedback that the scenarios do not feel ‘real’—it remains a game. That was not the case with InContext’s simulation. The consultants delved deeply to genuinely understand our business.”

Our Approach

The results

Over 300 managers, including the top 100, participated in Mexus. They described Mexus as a long-lasting, impactful, and mindset-changing experience. The participants gained a profound understanding of what Panalpina needs to remain sustainably successful and what they must do to achieve it.

After the simulation, participants actively sought each other out to determine the most optimal approach. Silo thinking decreased, and the larger interests of Panalpina were significantly better served.
